FDA Warning: Risk of oral clefts in children born to mothers taking Topamax (topiramate)

On March 4, 2011, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration informed the public of new data that shows that there is an increased risk for the development of cleft lip and/or cleft palate (oral clefts) in infants born to women treated with topiramate (Topamax and generic products) during pregnancy.

Due to the new data that shows an increased risk for oral clefts, the FDA has placed topiramate in Pregnancy Category D. Pregnancy Category D means there is positive evidence of human fetal risk based on human data.
