South Jersey Man Charged with Drunken Driving Following Three-Vehicle Crash

5:22 AM, Aug. 10, 2011 | VINELAND — A 23-year-old Vineland man was arrested for driving while intoxicated following a frightening crash at Wheat Road and East Avenue that sent three people to area hospitals. Benito Gutierrez was driving a 1997 Plymouth Voyager minivan west on Wheat Road at 7 p.m. Monday, according to police. Eyewitnesses reported the van was swerving over the road, narrowly missing utility poles. Gutierrez’s van veered across the centerline and careened head-on into a 2007 BMW driven by Dorolisa K. Boone, 53, of Vineland as it reached East Avenue, police said. After firefighters cut her from the wreckage, Boone and her passenger were airlifted to the Cooper University Hospital in Camden. Boone was in critical but stable condition Tuesday afternoon, a hospital spokesperson said. No additional information was available regarding the passenger, whose name was not released by investigators. Gutierrez was treated at South Jersey Healthcare Regional Medical Center for injuries that were not considered life-threatening. He also was issued a summons for reckless driving. Additional charges are pending further investigation by Office Fredrick DeMary of the police department’s Traffic Safety Unit.
