Michigan Experiences Worst of Fungal Meningitis Outbreak Due to Tainted Injections
The U.S. has recently experienced an outbreak of Fungal Meningitis. Multiple states have been affected since the source of the disease stems back to the New England Compounding Center. The NECC is responsible for preparing the steroid and shipping it to multiple health care facilities. Among the many states that received tainted steroids from NECC Michigan is the hardest hit. The following facilities unknowingly delivered the compromised solution to customers:
- MICHIGAN NEUROSURGICAL INSTITUTE
- MICHIGAN PAIN SPECIALISTS
- NEUROMUSCULAR & REHABILITATION
- SOUTHEAST MICHIGAN SURGICAL HOSPITAL
Michigan has experienced 164 cases as of this writing, eight of which resulted in severe spreading of infection to other joints and nine of which ultimately resulted in death. The only state with a higher death toll is Tennessee, but the case count in Michigan is more than double any other state (information directly sourced from CDC.gov).
Learn More About the Outbreak and Risk to Michigan Residents
To learn more about the details of the outbreak, watch this short video: The CDC.gov site provides some of the most common symptoms experienced by those infected, therefore if you are a Michigan resident be on the lookout for the following:
- Fever
- Headache
- Stiff neck
- Nausea and vomiting
- Photophobia (sensitivity to light)
- Altered mental status
Most of the injections were used to alleviate low back pain and knee pain. Individuals being treated for those issues should be on the highest alert; however, anyone in Michigan who has received an injection since Summer 2012 should consult a physician. Unfortunately, meningitis symptoms can take quite awhile to manifest so it is prudent to stay alert for them. If anyone reading this has experienced meningitis-like symptoms, be aware of your legal rights. Lack of oversight and subpar facility conditions at the NECC resulted in pain, financial loss, and even death in hundreds of victims. Our job is to connect those in need with the appropriate law firms dealing with these cases. We do not sell victims out to the highest bidder. The attorneys in our network are carefully selected and screened.
