Latest on Sexual Side Effects of Propecia

propecia sexual side effectsOne of Propecia’s primary functions is to reduce the effects of male pattern baldness and help regrow hair. In theory, better hair results in higher confidence and improved love life. It is ironic then that one of the most significant side effects of the drug is sexual dysfunction.   A recently filed lawsuit has underlined some of the most common complaints with Propecia. The Arkansas man behind the lawsuit against Merck and Co. had a variety of issues, many of which were sexual in nature. Here is more from Injury Lawyer News:

The plaintiff claims that he developed both cognitive impairment and sexual side effects while taking the medication, conditions which he claims persisted even after he discontinued his use of the medication. He chose to file a Propecia lawsuit with the help of a personal injury lawyer which alleged that the plaintiff suffered from significant pain and suffering as well as diminished quality of life, both as a direct result of the negligence of the defendant as well as wrongful conduct and inadequate warning.   The Food and Drug Administration approved Propecia, or finasteride, in 1997 for the treatment of male pattern baldness. Some of the sexual side effects of Propecia include reduced ejaculate volume, diminished libido, reduced sexual sensation, and erectile dysfunction. Depression and cognitive impairment have also been linked to the use of the drug.   According to the plaintiff’s lawsuit, the 43-year-old began taking the medication as prescribed by his physician in 2009, and continued to take it until 2011. He says that he didn’t have any prior knowledge of the potential complications associated with the drug.

This case comes on the heels of many like it, creating a multistate class action movement. Among the side effects discussed above, the following is a list of the most common experienced by users:

  • less desire for sex
  • difficulty in achieving an erection (erectile dysfunction)
  • decrease in the amount of semen
  • problems with ejaculation
  • gynecomastia
  • impotence
  • testicular pain
  • male breast cancer
  • prostate cancer

As you can see, the severity ranges from inconvenient to highly dangerous. There are a wide variety of attorneys attempting to work on this particular medical issue, however propecia users should know that not all lawyers are qualified to handle a case of this magnitude.   Our job at The Hayes Firm is not to take your case, but to connect you to the proper attorneys working on the real class action lawsuits. Some less reputable attorneys may take your money and pretend like they can have an actual effect against a giant pharmaceutical corporation, but few can back up their claims.
