Husband, wife die in Thanksgiving Eve hit-run tragedy outside New Dorp church
Â By Staten Island Advance November 26, 2009 Â STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — A 77-year-old woman seriously injured when she and her husband wereÂ mowed downÂ by a hit-and-run driver whileÂ walking to attend mass at a New Dorp church has died from her injuries. Â Lillian Sabados was pronounced dead at Staten Island University Hospital, Ocean Breeze, at 4 this morning.Â Her husband, Peter S. Sabados, 78, was pronounced deadÂ shortly after the 7:15 p.m.Â accidentÂ in front of our Our Lady Queen of Peace R.C. Church. Â Early this morning, Allmir Lekperic, 26, of Dellwood Road, was arrested,Â accused of being behind the wheel of the white Ford Econoline van that slammed into the couple while they crossed New Dorp Lane at Third Street to get to the church. Â LekpericÂ allegedly fled along New Dorp toward Richmond Road. Â He is charged with leaving the scene of an accident and driving with a suspended license.
