Deadly Tractor Trailer Crash Blocks I-64 in Alleghany Co.

The accident involving two tractor trailers happened just after seven Saturday night, east of Covington. According to state police, the driver of one truck ran off the left side of the interstate, crossed the median and hit an oncoming truck. The force of the accident caused the cab and trailer of the second truck to come apart. Police say 44-year-old Ashley Weikle of Clifton Forge was inside the cab when it plunged into the Jackson River. His body was later found. Right now, the driver of the first truck is facing reckless driving charges. —– 11:04 p.m. VDOT says both westbound lanes, and one eastbound lane of I-64 are still blocked —– 8:20 p.m. State Police say a deadly crash is blocking westbound Interstate 64 in Alleghany County. Sergeant Robert Carpentieri, of State Police’s Salem Division, says two tractor trailers crashed on I-64, about a mile east of Covington, around 7:10 p.m. As of 8:18 p.m., both westbound lanes are shut down, and one eastbound lane is closed. Troopers urge drivers to avoid the area.
