FREDERICK, Md. — A 4-year-old boy died after he became pinned underwater in an all-terrain vehicle crash on Burkittsville Road Saturday night, according to the Frederick County Bureau of Investigations. Â The boy died Sunday morning, according to a release sent out Sunday night from the Bureau of Investigations. Â The boy became pinned underwater on an overturned ATV, said police, who were called to the scene of the crash in the 6700 block of Burkittsville Road at 7:07 p.m. Â The boy was transported to Frederick Memorial Hospital, police said. Â The preliminary investigation indicates the child was riding a Polaris 50cc ATV on his family’s property, according to the release. Â Detective Marty Rowe is handling the investigation. Â Maryland law prohibits children under 12 from operating ATVs on state-designated trails, but there is no minimum age limit on private land. Â The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission says children under 6 should never be on an ATV, either as a driver or passenger. A state task force recommended in 2008 that Maryland adopt such a provision. Â The Associated Press contributed to this story
