ATV accident claims life of 4-year-old boy

March 21, 2010   atv FREDERICK, Md. — A 4-year-old boy died after he became pinned underwater in an all-terrain vehicle crash on Burkittsville Road Saturday night, according to the Frederick County Bureau of Investigations.   The boy died Sunday morning, according to a release sent out Sunday night from the Bureau of Investigations.   The boy became pinned underwater on an overturned ATV, said police, who were called to the scene of the crash in the 6700 block of Burkittsville Road at 7:07 p.m.   The boy was transported to Frederick Memorial Hospital, police said.   The preliminary investigation indicates the child was riding a Polaris 50cc ATV on his family’s property, according to the release.   Detective Marty Rowe is handling the investigation.   Maryland law prohibits children under 12 from operating ATVs on state-designated trails, but there is no minimum age limit on private land.   The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission says children under 6 should never be on an ATV, either as a driver or passenger. A state task force recommended in 2008 that Maryland adopt such a provision.   The Associated Press contributed to this story
